JSBSim does basically the same (although there is a name allocated for it), but the real question is: Is left most defined 0, or is right most defined 0, or is it something completely different (numbered in order of appearance)?
Maybe I'm confused: why do we care? The "0" gear is the first one listed. If it happens to be the nose gear, then the 3D modeller will use .../gear[0]/... to animate it, etc...
The only time we need to worry is when synchronizing the number across FDMs, and even then it's just a convention: make sure than gear N in the YASim configuration matches the corresponding gear in JSBSim.
Notions like left, right, nose, main, etc... don't seem relevant to me.
Unless you want to use the same model for different FDM's (where did we hear that again?).
