I've begun some scenery work for the Berlin area. I'd like to see some place/db where you could upload models and coordinates, which creates corresponding .stg files.
I've also made a start on some UK city and airfield scenery.
I was wondering about setting up a collaborative repository for this. (I can get vhost accounts on the cheap with a fair ammount of bandwidth).
For model positions the amount of data isn't that great - 11899 objects across these scenery sets:
e000n40/ e000n60/ e010n50/ w010n40/ w010n60/ e000n50/ e010n40/ e010n60/ w010n50/ w020n60/
is just under 13MB (and compresses to <0.25MB)
The models themselves will obviously be larger, but a few suitable "generic" models really can go a long way to making the scenery look nice. A handful of more specific "landmarks" improves things further.
If anyone has any data they'd like included in the database all I need is lat, lon, heading, and a model name - I have a script which drives the sim to update the ground elevations for the relevant points so that the models sit nicely on the ground. I'm happy to expand the models page on flightgear.stockill.org.uk to include any models that people want hosting.
We could probably start one for the European Scenery (to keep b/w reasonable) so people can come along and download the objects / placements they require.>
Its probably something that ought to be looked into but I'd like to hear from others who are developing European scenery and would like to place it under a free licence.
I'm happy for all my models to be GPL.
