Hi Stuart, I've checked in your first patch with my cleanup. I haven't had a chance to play with the second patch; if you're up for it, you should integrate it with what's now in CVS; I don't think it will be too hard. Otherwise you can leave it for me, but that won't happen for at least a week.
I'm pretty happy with the results. My test area is KHAF, and I can mostly maintain 60Hz with an NVidia 8800 GTS. With 400k random trees in the scene graph, that's pretty reasonable.
