By all means we should be careful about needless memory usage / wastage (and perhaps features that demand lots of memory should be disabled by default.) At the same time, memory is extremely cheap, (mostly) easy to upgrade and modern PCs are generally equipped with huge amounts of it. If nice new features require lots of memory to work well and are optional, I don't see any particular problem...
