A user who isn't interested in the history can also make a shallow clone 
with git which I would expect to be only very slightly larger than the 
working copy itself, enabling the user to save disk space by 
sacrificing functionality he/she isn't interested in. AFAIK there is no 
such choice if using SVN.

I strongly support a move to git (Hg is a unknown card to me and IMHO it'd 
seem wiser to build on the considerable git experience already present in 
our developer community). Being able to do version controlled work on the 
data and source locally even without commit rights to the main repository 
is very valuable in my opinion.
