You can also constrain movement to each of the three major planes by pressing shift-x, shift-y or shift-z. This can be done in the global reference frame, the object's reference frame, or a reference frame defined by the normal of the selected poly. If you are creative in rotating the object in object mode this means that you can constrain movement to any arbitrary plane. There are also python scripts to align the object and, IIRC the view to an arbitrary plane as well.
