Wow, I never considered doing it that way through the Schematic library. I already
can see advantages to doing it this way in conjunction with a hybrid footprint.
Thanks, it'll help in my next design.

| Another method is to have a single schematic symbol with a matching
| footprint. In the schematic symbol, you have extra pins which correspond to
| the additional pads, and which are super-imposed on each other. E.g., pins
| 1 and 1A will be on top of each other; then hide the name/number of 1A (do
| NOT make it a hidden pin!). I typically use a circle-symbol pin and a
| straight pin over each other to make it very obvious it's a double pin.

| Agreed, and I sometimes use this method as well. However, the method I
| described in my previous post has the advantage that you can use a
| through-hole footprint in conjunction with a SM footprint, and without
| having to create a "hybrid" footprint (in a PCB Library file) nor a "hybrid"
| component (in a Schematic Library file). And these footprints can still be
| used on their own, in PCBs where you don't want (or don't have the room to
| fit) dual footprints.
|
| I have mentioned it in previous posts, but I will repeat it here. When
| creating and using footprints and (corresponding/matching Schematic)
| components, it is prudent for *every* pad/pin (per component) to have an
| *unique* number/designator. Although Protel is supposed to have lifted its
| act on this matter, complying with that convention still avoids problems
| that can otherwise occur.
|
| So a "hybrid" relay should have pins 1, 1A, 2, 2A, ... (both schematic
| component and footprint). (In the case of my previous post, where I
| described the use of two footprints and two schematic components, this was
| not an issue, because there is a REL1-1 pad/pin and a Rel1A-1 pad/pin, etc,
| thus preserving the uniqueness of every pad's/pin's identity.)

| Geoff Harland.
