Excellent point, Rick! But one clarification. Migrating from unstructured to structured FM does not necessarily give you XML files. You may just have structured FM binary files which results in the same problem that John is running into. However, if you do convert all the way to XML, and maintain your source as XML, you are free to switch tools at a moment's notice.

Another option (someone may have mentioned this, I haven't read the entire thread) .. would be to export to MIF at specific points along your workflow. There are tools to convert from MIF to other formats.

Cheers,

to move away from FrameMaker in the future.

I'd think a vendor would say I'm going to create an application that kicks
FM's butt and as part of it, can ingest FM files.

What do I know. Thanks everyone

This isn't an unusual request (to migrate to another tool) .. but typically
when someone is a "FM user" with FM files, they would have FrameMaker
available to export to a neutral format.

FM isn't used by enough people to warrant creating a separate application
for migration.

Hi, John:

My point was that if the company was using InDesign, it would have to
be an early-enough standalone version that doesn't phone home to
Adobe. I use ID
CS6 standalone/non-subscription.

Perhaps the question has evolved to what applications are acceptable
on the corporate network, and which of them do folks on the list
think is the best one to migrate to, so as to avoid having to slog
through this effort going forward?

Despite its age, FrameMaker is still a great tool for the task of
technical writing and publishing. However, security issues in the
computing environments where it's used have become serious
considerations, so, to wit:, hence, therefore, and etc.....

Hi Peter...it's not the process for exporting/converting that's the
issue.
I got all that. I did it all the time to allow my user base to make
their edits.

The issue is installing and licensing the application. It WOULD be
installed on a standalone...mine. It still needs to validate by
connecting
to Adobe, and that's a problem.

BTW...all Adobe products do that, so bring ID into the equation does
nothing.

Looks like my earlier response got truncated. Apologies for any
confusion.
Would it be acceptable to install FM on a stand-alone machine, save
as MIF, and export/convert to formats of apps the corporate network
supports,
then copy these outputs to the network? Or, have that work done by a
service?

If a non-subscription version of InDesign is used on the corporate
network, a round-about approach could be to use the DTP Tools - MIF
Filter
for Adobe InDesign <http://www.dtptools.com/product.asp?id=mfid> to
convert MIF files InDesign. Within InDesign's own limits and
abilities,
the
conversion retains most, FrameMaker text formatting features and
specifications, and does its best to emulate page layouts.

Hi, guys...I have 5 years of FM files and my company doesn't like
FM installed on their network.

Are there any other applications that can be installed and open
native FM

book paradigm?

Thanks
