In the 60s, when cement splicing camera original A roll I would first splice to 
black leader, then splice to the next strip without scraping the black leader, 
not even leaving the whole frame of black leader, thus covering the area of the 
splice with a very small strip of black. I did this with both 8mm and 16mm. 
Worked very well.
