General guidelines:

1. Shoot the slowest stock you can.

2. Do not underexpose.  If possible. rate the stock at least one stop
   slower than the box says (assuming you're shooting color negative which
   is very compensating).  You want a dense negative.

3. The money you save shooting Super-8 over 16mm will be spent on lighting
   kit.
