Hmm, I also use Fvwm as my default window manager under Ubuntu and I
don't have these problems.

(steal focus?) to the xterm when it appears (is created) because I
usually want to start typing right away. (I call up an xterm with the
"Win-R" key combo and don't want to go hunting for it with the mouse
first).

If you want I can sent the Style components from my .fvwm for you to
compare (or my entire .fvwm, nothing secret there, just somewhat
large-ish). But I am in MS-Windows right now (business day, work needs
to be done, calendar needs to be synchronised to the iPhone).
