Dean is correct, MSP does *not* need the Winsock Proxy for IE access to web
pages and IE Access to FTP.
But,
The reality of deploying proxies is this.
If you provide it, they will come.
Once you have proxy services for HTTP, HTTPS, & FTP, someone will want
Telnet, NNTP, NTP, or some other socket proxy. What then? You install
Winsock Proxy Client... Winsock Proxy interferes with the TCP/IP Stack, and
is, in our experience, unstable.
CSM and other solutions exist for proxy traffic that do not require any
client software.
YMMV.

Okedoke , well 2-3000 users is well out of my league :-)
A client does *not* need to have winsock on it for any access via Internet
Explorer. You just point IE to the proxy. NT/w95 policies is a way to do
this. You can chain MSP or have multiple MSP, Just point the clients to the
required one. I'm sure CSM (http://www.csm-usa.com/) will have similar
features im sure.
A snip from Carric's post last semptember:
I am supporting about 2500 users on one Compaq 3000 (Dual PII
450, 2 Gigs RAM), and it doesn't seem to be too loaded yet.
cheers

actually, simultaneous connections could exceed 2-3,000; and even go up to
5,000.
if ms proxy requires a winsock client...is the winsock client already on
95/98/nt desktops, are is this a seperate installation?
i'm wondering now if csm can support 5,000 concurrent connections, since it
does not require a client from the desktop!?
