Dear List fellows,

My question: How can I service/replace the felt brushes & scratchy
metal slot edges on my 12" G4 PowerBook 1.33MHz optical drive entrance
slot?

The slot felt on this machine is either sticky and clotted, or simply
matted & prickly to the touch from something unknown from before I
purchased it. I've seen it scratch the disks I've put into this
machine before. Now that I'm replacing the now defective optical
drive, it's probably time to address/service this chronic problem.

In addition, the aluminum slot around the felt brushes has some fairly
sharp kicks on it, and I'd like to either burnish these over or away
from the opening, or file them down, or scrape them smooth. I'm
concerned for the sharp fragments some of these procedures might
produce, which could damage the replacement drive I'll be installing,
as well as the possibility for damage to media I insert into the
drive. I'm looking for your guidance here, as well.

Have you encountered or heard of these problems? Have you any
suggestions?

Thanks so much, and thank you for the truly thoughtful suggestions &
help you've been sending to me on the other issue of replacing the
optical drive and the hard drive on this machine!

All the best,
stanton
