Re HP870 I know little.
If the Epson has been unused for a long time, the print head is
probably clogged beyond redemption.
That said, Epson 600 drivers for OS 7, 8, 9 are still available on
Epson website.
OS-X does not support the RS422 serial port
The easiest (and perhaps only) way to connect the Epson under OS-X is
using a USB port PCMCIA card, then connect the printer via a
USB-Parallel adapter, and use the CUPS/Gutenprint (GIMP) drivers.
It might also be worth looking at RS232-RS422 connection issues. The
printers provide an RS232 port. The Mac serial port is RS422.
Perhaps double-check to make sure the cables you are using have
compatible pin connections.
