Booting OS 9 is the key. It's certainly a hassle to have to convert any modern video codec into something older, and then boot OS 9 to play it without stutter. It's a lot to ask, but it can be done. If I remember, you can't play smoothly in Classic, you must boot OS 9 directly to get smooth playback.
