I have rebuilt a large number of iBook of various makes and models. I strongly think that the BGA issue is related to how the iBook is physically handled over time. Picking the book up by a front corner leads to stress on the BGA contacts over time.
You may have an early unit that lasts forever, or a late model G3 that goes on the fritz tomorrow. Its hard to say without an x-ray scan of the welds.
