The modem does not know the Pismo is connected, the way internet sharing works is that the sharing host, in this case the G4 sets up a new local network on it's wifi, and routes that traffic through it it's live WAN connection which runs through the modem.
All the modem knows is that the host on the other end is sending more traffic than usual. This is likely what's causing the problems.
