i know maxtor bought quantum, but the plants, designs and management
haven't been replaced yet. i was saddened when i heard maxtor had
bought quantum. my problem with maxtor was with a scsi drive, at that
time maxtor had stopped producing scsi drives and seemed to think that
this meant they didn't have to honor the warranty, even though my exact
model drive was mentioned on their web page as being covered by the "no
quibble" warranty. they eventually forced the vendor to replace it,
hopefully they compensated the dealer. i think trying to get out of a
still good warranty just because you don't make that particular drive is
rather shady, they should have been willing to do something even if they
didn't have a replacement in stock, cash or a discount on another drive
would have been fine, they wanted to do nothing. i had to threaten
legal action, email them a copy of thier current web page, and finally
had to contact one of thier business partners, and make several phone
calls, i hated to bash them that way but it finally got results. i
don't like being a jerk, so when a company or person forces me to be one
i'm very unhappy and very intense about it, ramping up slowly as
necessary to whatever level it takes, sometimes wheels have to be
really, really squeaky to get the oil. you can substitute a more common
expression for "jerk", but i'm trying to avoid profanity on list.

my maxtor is fast, and keeps up with the quantum for small transfers or
very large transfers, but for transfers between about 500m and several
gig the quantum does much better. it's not likely to matter except for
large copy operations or unusually large files. neither drive is loud,
but the quantum is a little more quit.

if fujitsu is getting out of the business it's definitely not a good choice.
