So far I haven't had much experience with IDE drives, and the little I've
had, has been very bad. The second Samsung drive in my G3 is about to die,
just 4 months old. Sounds like sparrows in spring time. The first one was
also just about 4 months old, when I returned it. As you might guess, I'll
never buy a Samsung drive again.
I bought a Maxtor Diamond 5400rpm today, plugged it in, formatted and
copied the old drive to it, running from it now. About 30 minutes of real
work time, and up running again, only thing left is to get the chirpy drive
out and return it. I like this Mac.
About SCSI drives, I have a big pile of old IBM drives still working just
fine. The Quantum drives seems to have a bit shorter life, (if 4-5 years
extensive use can be said to be short).
Someone mentioned Conner, - my soon-to-be-leaving-home-for-good-snifff IIfx
has a Conner 230 mb hd, that's now good for some 33.000 hours of use, 10
years old and still running.
