Well, I would like to remind you of this: Apple is a company that disperses products that are cutting edge. The 'threats' are not 'meritless' but rather serious and with decades and decades of legal backing. They are not bullying people but protecting thier product.
How would you like it if you made the perfect automobile engine and someone else wanted to find out how to take it apart so they could do whatever to it. They could 1) repair it or 2) figure out what's what in it and build a better one thus putting you out of business. This is legal in our capitalistic society of the Planet Earth in the 21st Century.
