It illustrates you were 100% wrong: you said "he was only hosting the links". Difficult to discuss something when you can reverse yourself midstream. Hosting files is a violation of copyright. Publishing links to where you can find them PUBLISHED BY THE OWNER isn't. (Contributory copyright violation would be if you posted a link to an illegal copy of the file.) I'm sure he was nailed. I'd wager he folded under threat of legal fees rather than go to court. Any big company can squash people through legalistic intimidation. That doesn't make it legal.
