I have the same computer that you do. I have been doing church newsletters
for several years.  Ram is very easy to install.
There are plenty of cheap scanners out there because a lot of people are
just using them for scanning at screen rez and sending email. For a nice
newsletter you don't want one of those. You really don't have to buy a big
size, splicing scans together is not that hard with Photoshop. A bed size of
8.5x14 is OK. When buying, look at the bit size...42bit is excellent. If you
can afford it, get the  transparency option.
You can get a 11x17 BW printer for $800 - $1400 or so brand new. I have
plenty of ads on them in my printer mags. Best to get postscript, most of
them have ethernet. Printing with AppleTalk is Sloooow.
I also have a very good Yamaha  CD burner. To read as well as burn, get
CD/RW. External SCSI  is probably the best way to go. The burner that you
buy will most likely be faster than the one on the G3.
I can supply the specs and prices on printers and scanners if you are
interested. I just need to dig up the mags and ads to check.
