given the speed and cost of dvd media, i think a second drive is your best option. ideally an external drive so it can be stored away from the computer. i'm using a second internal drive for backup, but nothing on it is mission critical. the other option is to just backup your work files periodically on dvd/cd media, with fewer files and periodic backing up it's not as time consuming, but of course there's always a chance of missing that one file you really need. it's an odd time when drives are cheaper than backup media. i don't remember what the case on your machine looks like, but if you have a spare 5 1/4 inch bay you can even get one of the pullout drive carriers for the backup drive, otherwise i'd consider fire wire (actually another flavor of scsi) or scsi for an external.
