They should be turned off at night because they are not being used for a
long period. However, I feel the best saving of electricity  would be to
make sure the G3s turn the video signal off instead of using a screen saver
although some monitors might not support this. Have been using a 3rd party
extension which works better than Apple's energy saver.

Rebuild the desktop file once a month (or if there is something strange
happening). Re-installing a program should only be necessary if there is a
disk or virus problem.
