I would suggest updating to 9.1 by all means. 9.04 is a known for it 
quirks.
Apart from that, throwing out specific preferences, and rebuilding the 
desktop periodically, say once a week, is a good habit to get into.
Those to throw out are:
Finder and MacOS.
There are more, depending on what you are running.
Periodically zapping the PRAM is also good help. Just don't forget to 
let it chime at east 3 times, sometimes up to 5 times is necessary. And 
don't forget to reset your AppleTalk Prefs if you have it on and set to 
Ethernet because zapping always resets it to the default printer port.
