Apart from that, throwing out specific preferences, and rebuilding the desktop periodically, say once a week, is a good habit to get into. Those to throw out are: Finder and MacOS. There are more, depending on what you are running. Periodically zapping the PRAM is also good help. Just don't forget to let it chime at east 3 times, sometimes up to 5 times is necessary.
