You need a CD-ROM drive with an Apple firmware ROM in. The ROM contains 
custom instructions that help the Mac recognise and boot from the CD from 
the on-board Mac Firmware. I don't *think* even most modern CD-ROM or 
CD-RW drives that boot a PC will boot a Mac. Some people have reported 
isolated models of CD-RW that seem to boot a Mac OK but I have no idea if 
there is a definitive list.
