Thanks for the suggestions, Greg Burkman.

I took your advice and checked the hard disk with Disk First Aid [OK], rebuilt the 
desktop and zapped the pram with TT 3 Lite and then trashed the prefs you suggested I 
trash. Still crashes, even with only a standard Apple system. 

It has a new system [9.2.1] about a week or two old. I'm beginning to suspect it may 
involve my hard drive. 

And, yes, two weeks ago, it had been a long time since I'd done a clean install.
