Im pretty sure this is not an OS issue. I began to experience these crashes under OS 9.1 and I suspected a corrupted system after my normal repairs [DiskWarrior, rebuilding the desktop and zapping the pram] had no effect.
I eventually did a clean install of 9.1 and still got the same series of problems: sudden disappearances of running applications from games to email programs to Appleworks 6 with an error 13 dialog window. Also sudden quitting of the Finder when doing things like accessing the the Apple menu or doing nothing at all. Then I get hangs or freezes in the middle of start up as the icons march across the bottom of the screen. Always hanging at a different icon. Other times I get a programers window [I believe its called that]. The white window with > . This would happen at the first OS 9.1 or OS 9.2 screen. With a forced restart its gone on the next startup. All of these symptoms occur whether Im using a strictly Apple system or one that has my third party extensions included. In my ten years of using the Mac, Ive never encountered an error13 and when I look it up to see what it means - uninstalled interupt - its beyond my knowledge and experience.
