I used a 20 GB Maxtor with a Rev 1 board with no problems, whatsoever. Some people have problems with some larger drives than that, with certain 40 GB IBM models getting lots of complaints.
As for slave drives being the issue, yes, that's what I've seen reported. More specifically, the problem has to do with running 2 drives at ATA-66 speeds. OS X supposedly drops the primary channel to ATA-33 if a slave drive is detected to avoid problems.
