Well, the theory is that the secondary IDE channel runs at half the speed of the primary and OS X drops the primary to the speed of the secondary. My embellishment, based on incorrect recollection of the details, doubled the speed of both channels in the retelling of the tale. (On such errors, great social movements begin.)
Indeed, the B&W rev 1 primary channel is 33 MHz and the secondary is 16 MHz.
