Disklight is in the top left but even farther to the left then where the Apple icon is. Disklight tells you if you are writing or reading data.
I think its correct that one shouldn't begin throwing stuff away. Right now while I'm connected, my top left is blinking in the place of the Apple Icon too, only its the ARA Telephone Pole icon. I believe whatever is blinking in that location is merely what is using processing power in the background. Maybe I get the telephone pole because I have ARA settings checking my connection. Your situation is probably something similar. Or I could be all wet too. You might have to grow used to the flashing depending on which icon it is.
