OK Mark this is what I've done so far.

I have a beige G3 desktop 233 Rev A rom. (The Rev A rom seems to have
potential problems for a number of things; maybe I've run into one:
see below.)

First thing I did was to up the memory from 128mb to 576mb. I left a
64 mb stick in the third memory slot and bought two x 256mb sticks.
These are 168 pin PC133 modules the std variety used in Intel
machines. I was going to mailorder them from OWC but with shipping,
customs fee, GST, PST (we're well taxed in Canada) it was almost as
cheap to get them at the local London Drugs computer store (which
also has the advantage that I can return stuff that doesn't work.) If
anyone's interested they cost CDN $65 a piece. I'll probably add
another stick later on.

The next thing was a USB card. I needed this for a new Epson scanner.
It worked fine on a 2-port USB v1.1 card but when I tried a 4-port
card which was supposed to be OK for 1.1 and 2 the computer crashed
at startup.

Now was this a Rev A rom problem? Or was it that the CPU is too slow.
The card called for G3/266 and mine's a 233. Don't know. Eventually
I'll find out when I get a USB/Firewire card and deal with it them.
For now the USB 1.1 card will do the trick.

The next step, which I'm facing with some trepidation, is upgrading
the CPU to at least a G3 500 and maybe G4 500. I've been reading all
the information I can find on how to do this. A good place to look,
which I thank Brian Christmas on this list for is:

When I do decide and do it, I'll put a short post on this list.

Ciao
