>> Tim, Bruce,

I'm new to the list, so apologies if I'm covering old ground.

About the ATI driver updater, I also have some concerns, thus far,
apparently unfounded.

The installer for the Oct. 29, 2002 Radeon 8500 updater informs the
user that it won't install the driver software in any OS above 10.2.1.
But I learned this just after installing X.2.3 (without Classic) on a
G4 400 Sawtooth.

When I first saw the warning, I quit the installer. A couple of e-mails
to ATI got a response that the October update posted on the ATI site
"should" work with X.2.3; not "will" or "does" work. Didn't inspire me
with confidence.

In the end, there was only one way to find out, so I ran the installer.
It installed without incident, as did the card. So far it's been
running fine.

Is this the universal experience? Or are horrible software conflicts
looming in my future?

I should mention, in case it's significant, that, though it was sold to
me as a Radeon 8500, my card doesn't say "Radeon" or "8500" anywhere on
it that I can detect, though it does say "ATI" and give a long part
number. The Apple system profiler identifies it as:

Card Name: ATY R200; ROM #113-85710-126; video memory: 64 MB

Regards,

Joel Tatelman.
