In this case only a common wall separated him from the neighbors. He
has DSL and had an airport network for the two desktop Mac's ann his
iBook. Apple's airport is no different than any other 802 technology.
Since his DSL was always on if the airport was on, another wifi
equipped computer could access it.

It has been known to happen.

In this case the neighbors teenage son was using it to download MP3's.
The clue was when periodically the system would act like it had sludge
in it and no one was downloading anything in the house. Nothing
malicious, but with a different user it could have been.

When you use a wifi network for online shopping, your information,
credit card data, etc. is going out as a radio signal. It is a
legitimate concern depending on location. If you live a half mile from
the nearest neighbor? It's no concern.

It's a growing problem in college communities. There are numerous
forums and bulletin boards for sharing locations where someone
discovered an available access point.

Just something to consider with a wifi setup. Wifi is a very useful
tool, however, it does broadcast a radio signal and you need to be
cognizant of it's potential for abuse by others. I love my airport
iBook but here at home it's a simple wired network.
