If you're doing online shopping, your browser should be encrypting your
information and credit card data before it ever leaves your computer.
Remember, that data is going to be "broadcast" over the internet,
regardless if it goes through a wireless network or not.  You can also
have the wireless network add *another* layer of encryption while it's
in the (local) ether.

There are many open wireless networks around (some are open by intent;
others because that's often the default option), but it is not
difficult to configure a closed network.  Access to wireless networks
can be controlled by ip address, password, encryption key or by
combinations thereof.
