Update:

I did a 'Hard Reset' overnight.  Now the machine will boot from the CD.  But
the HD does not show up to install onto.  Disk Utility cannot see it.  I'm
now assuming the 'new' HD is bad or the BUS is screwed up.

It's an Adaptec controller card.

The end of the SCSI cable has some electronics that I'm guessing are for
termination.

If I buy an IDE cable, does it connect on the side of the mother board near
the PCI BUS?  Do I need anything other than a cable?
