The steps I use for photoshop


1) Open picture in photoshop
2) Crop your picture.
3) Resize your canvas.
4) Save new file as .psd -- Important as this file is the starting picture before adjustments.
5) Open new.psd file
6) Add adjustment layer
7) Adjust the layer for color correction
8) If satisfied with correction, merge layers.
9) Convert file to high quality jpg
10) Change dpi to desired resolution.
11) Save to new file name jpg


Though not as good as a 4x5 negative picture, you will get a decent photo when done.
