As we all no doubt know, Apple basically killed off all of the PCI powermacs with the release of OS X (and 9.2 for that matter, but who's counting?)

As the owner of a B&W G3, I must admit that I am a little concerned. It appears that Panther, though having 64-bit features, will still run on just about anything that will natively run 10.2.

It's the 64-bit part that worries me. If Apple's next OS upgrade is 64-bit only, that will effectively kill off all but the newest machines (i.e. G5). It seems silly for them to run a hybrid OS, thereby damaging the performance of these new powerhouses, so this seems a likely upgrade path.

Has anyone heard any rumours about the proposed path Apple's OS will take? I heard from a relatively non-reputable source that there is an OS 11 in the works that will be 64-bit only, while the X series will continue to support the 32-bit g3/g4 market. Is there any truth to this that anyone has heard about? At what point is Apple going to force me to buy a new machine if I want to keep up with the latest OS advantages? As the G3 yosemite and the G4 Yikes! are so similar in system architecture, wouldn't they have to, at the very least, kill off both at the same time?

Also, has anyone heard if there are any new, unexpected, system requirements to run Panther? I plan on being an early adopter, and I will be sure to let everyone who is not so cavalier about upgrading know of my experiences, positive or negative.
