Q1: Is it really true that the only way to get a 250 GB drive on my computer is to spend $69 plus shipping for one of those outrageously priced cards? (ie: anyone see anything cheaper?)
Yes, you need a new card, and possibly you might find one for less, but $69 is not outrageously priced as far as controller cards go...
Q2: What's the cheapest/oldest mac that will recognize a 250GB drive?
One that will take one of the PCI controller cards. Probably a 7500 is your best bet.
