Should I be worried? Is the
strange monitor cut off a result of my having run the 10.2.8 update
tonight?

I think the 10.2.8 update was one of the biggest mistakes from Apple. Since Jaguar came out, all the updates seem to have been real improvements, except the short lived 10.2.5 which was replaced very quickly replaced by 10.2.6. My system had been so stable for so long that I'd forgotten what a hassle it used to be. I ran the ill-fated 1st 10.2.8 update from Software Update, and it crashed my system so completely that it wouldn't even reboot. They hadn't posted the 10.2.8 Combo yet, and I sweated out 18 hours waiting for the Combo to be posted. That fixed whatever was keeping it from booting (Disk Utility, Norton, Drive 10 & Disk Warrior didn't help in the interim). Within a hour or two of posting the 1st Combo update, Apple yanked the 1st 10.2.8 completely, and it disappeared for 10 days or so. The 2nd 10.2.8 had the same name, which really seems crazy, having two versions with identical names? Sadly, the new version didn't seem to fix very much, and I think your strange monitor cut-off is a testament to that.
So far I've read about the ethernet problems that were supposedly the reason for yanking it originally. Plus: Firewire & USB card problems, laptop battery problems bad enough for Apple to warrantee batteries, preferences being reset system wide, Safari much less stable, monitors going black, total freeze lockups, and a host of other minor problems. This has to be the worst update I've seen, and I really wish there was a way to downgrade to 10.2.6 which was super stable for me. I've had two total freezes in the past 24 hours. I had zero in the previous year or so. Perhaps they purposefully released a bad update just prior to releasing the new Panther OS to help boost sales? Nah, but it was sure a stroke of bad luck for some of us. Kris Tilford
