Check your Finder Preferences (Finder --> Preferences in menu). There is a check list. It is possible in OS X to uncheck "removable media" and the CD will not show up on the desktop. It should, however, show up in an finder window whether it is checked or not.

Sorry for the other email. I have this annoying habit of mistakenly pressing Command Shift-D in OS X mail while trying to type a capital D and the message gets sent.
