Installed a Pioneer DVR-105 CD/DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive as the sole optical
drive (an Apple-compatible CD-ROM-R-R/W drive had been there).

Installed DVD Player 1.3 (CD/DVD Driver 1.3.1) with the patches to allow
any drive.

Machine won't play DVDs ... reports something like "necessary hardware is
not installed".

Is a gen-u-wine Apple DVD drive actually required (the CD player seems to
work fine, but not the DVD player) ?

The answer to your last question is no. I have a similar setup on a MT. The Pioneer 105 works great. Prior to that I was using a BTC combo drive and it also played DVD's fine.

There are differences in the versions of the players I'm using. In 9.2.2 DVD Player v2.7 was installed using the hack. In 10.2.8 I just accessed the install package on a Jaguar upgrade CD using Pacifist and installed DVD Player v3.2.

I am, however, using a Radeon 7000 32MB for video. I don't think that would matter for DVD playback, but am not certain. I'm sure someone else on the list can say for sure.

You might try using VLC instead of the Apple DVD Player.
