I'm beginning to suspect this, too.

The machine is a Rev. 3C; the DVD drive is a CD/DVD-ROM-R-R/W. The message 
indicates wrong hardware is present, which certainly points to the drive being 
wrong.

What DVD drive was standard on a Wings-equipped Beige G3?
