Forgive me but I'll try. Digital video is digital video. You take analog from
vhs, or your tv or 8mm or hi8 and send it to a video digitizer also known as a
video analog/digital converter. Your A/V card or pci video card has a a/d
converter on it. So does an outboard video digitizer that works through
firewire.

The digitizer produces a digital video file on the computer's hard drive. It
can be in any number of formats including DV in a couple of flavors, AFF etc.
They can be in highly compressed formats such as mpeg1 and mpeg2 or 3.

It is important to understand that digital video formats can be converted from
one to the other, sometimes with no loss in quality, sometimes with some loss.
You can also scale the image to fill the screen. Often it takes a considerable
amount of computing time, which is where a fast computer comes in handy.
Overnight works well for me.

The video editing programs you mentioned can work in various formats. Adobe
Premiere is happy with DV as is Final Cut to which it is very similar. I don't
know Premiere very well, but I do know that FC can accept a number of different
formats and can output many too.

iMovie requires DV but you can convert most formats to DV using Quicktime Pro
and other programs.

None of these editing programs care how the digital video got onto your hard
drive. Firewire, usb, serial or digital video created in the computer:
whatever.

Pick the editing program that works for you and convert your a/v video to it.
iMovie is a very good choice for those new to video editing. You may never be
constrained by its limits. If you find it can't do what you want, you will have
gained a lot of experience that will be of use to you if you decide to climb the
learning curve of Final Cut or Premiere or Avid.

I'm not an expert in these matters and I had to work hard to get my Beige system
going in DV. I've had invaluaable help getting there from members of this
list, which is why I'm happy to share what I've learned.
