If you're still interested in filming videos, have you considered trading
up to a Digital-8 camcorder? I believe only Sony makes them, but they
will playback Hi-8 tapes(!). Dig-8 tapes basically are Hi-8 tapes, IIRC
- they just run at a higher speed. You could possibly use your current
tapes as well (caveat - I'm not sure if there are tolerance issues
concerning their use at this higher speed).

You can likely find them for under U$500 (the DCR-TRV250 is available for
appx $650Cdn up here).
