Apparently the analog-to-DV converter or "bridge" that you're talking about
is this one for $190 US:

but how about this one for $165?

I have heard good things about the latter. I'd like to get into this video
editing myself (my Mac is a G4 733/OS 9.2.2), but like you I'd need one of
these converters (since my Canon hi-8 camcorder and all its tapes are
analog), and I've been trying to compare their features and prices.

Speaking of taking in videotapes from a VCR and editing them in the Mac,
and then exporting them back to tape (or burning onto DVD), here's
something I was wondering about:

Would it be possible to import entire commercial movies, edit out the
non-G-rated parts that you don't want your kids to see, and put them back
on tape or DVD as G-rated? I was wondering because I have an 11-year old
daughter who saw the big Titanic exhibit with us in Chicago, and this was
the first she had really heard about the Titanic disaster and didn't know
much about it, although it really got her interest up. So, I thought it
would be neat to show her the blockbuster Titanic movie that was made a few
years ago and was so popular, to give her a sense of the drama of that
gigantic luxury ship sinking in the middle of the night with so many people
aboard. BUT, there are those sex scenes in the movie that I would NOT want
her to see, such as when the lovers ran down into the basement of the ship
(that's a nautical term) and started doing X-rated things in the backseat
of a car, etc. What if I could buy tape from Amazon.com and then feed it
into the Mac, edit out such raunchy stuff, and export it back to tape again
or make a DVD? Then she and other kids could watch it without harm. Is that
sort of thing possible nowadays?

Best wishes,

Tom
