f you're still interested in filming videos, have you considered trading
up to a Digital-8 camcorder? I believe only Sony makes them, but they
will playback Hi-8 tapes(!). Dig-8 tapes basically are Hi-8 tapes, IIRC
- they just run at a higher speed. You could possibly use your current
tapes as well (caveat - I'm not sure if there are tolerance issues
concerning their use at this higher speed).

You can likely find them for under U$500 (the DCR-TRV250 is available for
appx $650Cdn up here).

New video camera and converter all-in-one.

This will work, but for the same price range you can get a DV video camera (in
the Canon line) that has a real time converter in it so you can attach your old
hi-8 machine to the new camcorder and digitize directly into the computer. I've
been using this system for over a year and find it satisfying.

If you have old VHS tapes as well as the hi-8, you'd be stuck without a
converstion option using a hybrid camcorder.

The Hi-8/digital Sonys are larger than the DV camcorders and are essentially a
compromise technology.

An additional advantage is the real time digital to analog option which allows
you to copy edited video out of your machine to any analog video recorder. In
addition, computer video editors display on computer monitors which do not give
an accurate redition of color or contrast as it will appear on an analog tv
screen. Both iMovie and Final Copy will output video to the firewire port for
previewing on an analog video monitor. An outboard converter like those in the
Canon cameras will allow you to do this. The sony hybrids won't.

If you are going to spend the money, why not go for the more flexible option?
