The recognition of various drive sizes has something to do with a gentle combination the Mac's firmware, IDE bus architecture, etc. There is no way to "force" the internal bus to see more of the drive. However, it can be remedied with an ATA controller card. The controller cards have firmware and bus architecture that allows bigger drives.
