Has anybody had any success with cloning, other than the obvious benefits of cloning to create a clean backup.

Last week I used Carbon Copy Cloner to move one of my users from their old G4 to their new G5 via firewire target mode.
Not a single hitch.
Hmmmm...
I was using an external drive with CCC to create the image, and Disk Utility to do the restore. The process went smoothly, and the cloned system did boot up. I just had way to many problems with panics and crashes. Lots of problems with the big Adobe apps.
I bought two G3/400B&Ws to use in my business. Setting up the first one was delightful. The second one (the evil twin) has been nothing but grief. No matter what I do, I can not get Panther to run on it. (It will not boot from 9 to 10.3. I am beginning to suspect that I might have some sort of hardware issue. I know how to verify that the RAM is good, but don't know how to check the other suspects.
Your comments are encouraging, so maybe I will have another go at it. I think I will try cloning the good G3/400 to the evil one, and then install all the additional software I need on it.
