you are correct, the last section is for power for an amplifier in the microphone. if
you
use a mini stereo to rca plug cable with it you can send it normal "line" level audio
signals, from any tape out on an amplifier or other source (0.7V peak, nominally, for
best
results from a headphone jack you need 150 ohm loading/matching resistors with most
units,
but not with a "line" or "tape" out signal). used this way with any of the macs that
use
the mics with the extra long plug you can record stereo sound, or mono of course. if
necessary in your setup, you can use a "Y" cable on the tape out signals on the amp
(i.e.
if they are already in use) and there shouldn't be any problem.

if you have problems with "hum", make sure the amplifier is grounded (and any turntable
etc. you are using). i'm disappointed most stereo gear still doesn't have a 3 prong
grounded cord (not even high end gear). also, if the stereo/turntable/etc. cord isn't
polarized (polarized plugs only plug in one way, and are somewhat safer, unpolarized
plugs
will only be found on older equipment), plugging it in the other way can make a large
difference.
